With startups requiring a fraction of what they used to because today's platforms offer so much more as a starting point, and a sizable number of VC firms unable to raise new funds, it feels like we are now witnessing the conclusion of a "10 year experiment". One where money invested in venture funds had exploded and fund sizes had more than tripled.  Is it co-incidence that VC performance has fallen off a cliff during this time period, causing traditional Limited Partners to be leery of re-upping to the current Venture Capital model?

So if startups no longer need the $10MMs they used to in the past, where are they now going for venture capital?  And if LPs are less than thrilled with the 2 ½% Management Fee plus 20% carry model, who IS still interested in VC as an investment class, and what does this mean for the established VC industry?

Come and join this lively debate when our experienced and opinionated panelists explore these questions & more:

·   How much venture capital do web & mobile startups now need to get to break even?

·   How is the VC model evolving?

·   Where is the money coming from?

·   What returns are they expecting?

·   What does this mean for the first time team seeking funding?

Saad Khan, Partner, CMEA
Saad has spent his career innovating. From R&D to entrepreneurship, from Hollywood to Silicon Valley, Saad has always sought the bleeding edge of technology and creativity. “I’m happiest when I am surrounded by whiteboards and thought provoking people.”

His pursuit of innovation often takes him to unexpected places. Saad grew up between Pakistan and the Bay Area, and attended an American high school in Karachi where his soccer tournaments and theater performances were often played out in locations including Kathmandu, Delhi, and Islamabad.

After moving back to the Bay Area, Saad launched his first Internet Startup while still a student at Stanford. Those early lessons were subsequently put to use at the Walt Disney Company, where Saad helped launch their Internet Strategy across their media properties, and then at IBM alphaWorks, one of the first corporate crowd-sourcing initiatives for IBM research.  Saad then spent years building companies, advising entrepreneurs, and investing in Silicon Valley startups at Garage Technology Ventures where he worked closely with early stage entrepreneurs across the Garage portfolio including Pandora, cFares, and TripleHop (ORCL). Saad led Garage’s software and media investments, and spun-out (and subsequently sold) the Garage advisory business.

“Whenever I’m considering an investment, I ask ‘Would I want to work on that team?’ If the answer is yes, then I know I’m on the right path.”

In addition to his activities at CMEA, Saad also co-founded the Film Angels, an angel network for indie film where recent presenters have included Carlos Santana, Steve Wozniak, and many Academy award winning actors, directors and producers. Saad is an advisor to peer-to-peer internet lending platform Lending Club and is a Charter member of TIE.

Ann Miura-Ko, Partner, Maples Investment
Ann Miura-Ko is a partner at Maples Investments where her investment interests include capitally efficient software and technology enabled services.

In addition to serving at Maples Investments, Ann is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Management Science and Engineering Department at Stanford University, where her research focuses on mathematical modeling of computer security. As a part of the program, she teaches several courses in Stanford's renowned Technology Ventures Program, including Technology Venture Formation, High-tech Entrepreneurship, and the Mayfield Fellows Program. She has helped graduate engineering students develop business plans for new technology products or services they have developed while studying at Stanford, and many of her students have gone on to secure Angel and VC funding for their ideas.

Prior to joining Maples Investments, Ann served as an analyst at Charles River Ventures, where she managed two portfolio companies in the Open Source software and web analytics markets. During her tenure at Charles River Ventures, Ann oversaw the research into and the eventual funding of enterprise content integration company Venetica, which went on to be acquired by IBM.

Prior to Charles River Ventures, Ann was a senior business analyst at McKinsey and Company, where she served clients in the wireless Internet market in Japan, Spain and the U.S. In this capacity, she developed a venture capital arm for a Japanese wireless operator, leading the analysis of threats and opportunities for investment within the U.S. wireless market.

Ann grew up in Palo Alto, California and, as a result, was exposed at an early age to the world of startups, technology and venture capital. She developed an early passion for robotics and went on to major in electrical engineering at Yale University where she received her BS degree. For her senior project, she was part of a five person team that designed four robots to autonomously play soccer. That team placed fourth at the second annual Robocup competition held in Paris, France in 1998.

Amy Errett, Partner, Maveron
Amy is our horseback riding, fly-fishing, black-diamond snowboarding, wine collecting, SF Giants-loving Californian. She joined the Maveron team as a partner in 2008, expanding our operations beyond the rain of the Pacific Northwest’s Seattle to the fog of San Francisco. She offers Maveron more than 25 years of business and operating expertise as a leading entrepreneur, senior executive and social-mission visionary. Her focal points are emerging Web enabled consumer trends, e-commerce social shopping, and online education.

Amy currently serves on the Altius Education, Livemocha and KidZui boards of directors.

Amy’s multifaceted career has ranged from the online Web 2.0 media industry to the offline consumer marketplace, and has stretched as far as volunteer nonprofit leadership. Most recently, she was chief executive officer and an owner of Olivia, repositioning the travel company as a complete lifestyle company for gay women both online and offline while multiplying revenues from $5 million to $25 million in 2007.

In 2006, she was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Northern California. Prior to her work at Olivia in 2002, she founded and served as chair and chief executive officer of The Spectrem Group, a worldwide strategic consulting, information, and M&A advisory firm. Amy sold Spectrem to an IPG subsidiary, NFO Worldwide (NYSE:NFO) in 1996. After the sale, she joined the senior management team at E*Trade where she diversified the company’s business beyond brokerage and ran a $200 million business that encompassed the management of E*Trade’s growth areas, including their business-to-business stock option division, and launched a successful asset-based products and investment management services division. Among Amy's citations is the Israel Fellows Award, presented by the San Francisco–based Jewish Community Federation. A passionate humanitarian, Amy is the chair of the board of Glide Foundation, San Francisco’s largest nongovernmental, direct social services organization. Amy is also a member of San Francisco’s Barbary Coast chapter of YPO and serves on the board of Wharton West.

A New York native, Amy earned an MBA in finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in liberal arts from the University of Connecticut. She is a fanatical UCONN Huskies fan where she was a student athlete. (This makes for fascinating partner meetings during basketball season since she is not a DUKE fan!) She and her partner live in San Francisco with their daughter.

Works with: Altius Education, KidZui, Livemocha, Mozes, VideoEgg
