Raising the First Round

 

Whether it comes from VCs, angels, or friends and family, that first round of funding often is the toughest one to raise. Listen to experienced investors as they explain what they are looking for today in early-stage companies, and to successful entrepreneurs as they describe what works and what doesn’t. Learn how to identify the right early-stage investors, where to find them, and ways to structure the first round so you don’t make it difficult to raise the next one!

Prashant Shah, Managing Director, Hummer Winblad Venture Partners (www.humwin.com)

Prashant Shah, Managing Director, joined Hummer Winblad in December 2000. He has been instrumental in many investments including Baynote, Bridgestream, Cenzic, InMage, Jareva Technologies, Krillion, Scalent, SyncVoice, Tizor and Voltage Security. He also observes a number of these boards. In addition, Prashant is an active Charter Member of TiE Silicon Valley (www.tiesv.org), where he is Chair of the Software SIG; and a member of the Board of Trustees for Astia (www.astia.org). Prior to Hummer Winblad, Prashant spent many years defining and launching high tech products. His background spans all seven layers of the OSI stack with product management roles at enCommerce (acquired by Entrust), Cypress Semiconductor and AT&T. Prashant received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and an MBA from the University of Chicago.

Cindy Padnos, Managing Director, Illuminate Ventures

Ms. Padnos is the founding Managing Partner of Illuminate Ventures, a newly launched high tech venture capital fund and continues to serve as a Director of Outlook Ventures where she has participated in committing the firm’s $140M fund to investments in early and mid-stage high-tech companies since 2004. Cindy's experience and focus encompasses Internet/Web 2.0, SaaS, technology-enabled services, mobile communications and software sectors. Before entering the venture capital community Ms. Padnos gained almost 20 years of operational experience holding progressively responsible positions: as the founder and CEO of on-demand software company Vivant Corporation, acquired by publicly traded Evolve (EVLV); as President and CEO of Acumen where a financial turn-around effort resulted in a favorable M&A transition; as vice  president of marketing at Scopus Technology helping to position the company for its successful IPO; as marketing director at privately held companies IDE and at Ingres and in sales and marketing management at AT&T during the critical divestiture period. Cindy also served as a management consultant in the information technology sector while at Arthur D. Little and Booz Allen & Hamilton. Ms. Padnos earned her BA, magna cum laude, at the University of Michigan and received her MBA/MSIA with honors from Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business. She serves on the Board of Advisors for the Tepper School of Business, MyWay Interactive and for Astia and on the Board of Directors of privately held companies Xactly Corporation, Sim Ops Studios, ScoutMetrics and LPI&M.

Paul Hsu, Principal, NeoCarta Ventures (www.neocarta.com)

Paul Hsu has nearly ten years of experience in principal venture capital financing, technology commercialization and private company growth strategy.  He is currently a Principal at NeoCarta Ventures, a $300m venture fund with offices in Menlo Park, CA and Boston, MA.  The professionals at NeoCarta have financed over 80 private technology companies, nearly half of which have succeeded in going public and/or merged with other companies.  In particular, Paul has invested in companies in such sectors as wireless, software and services, digital media, and consumer.Paul joined NeoCarta in 2000 from Merrill Lynch's Technology Mergers and Acquisitions Group. While at Merrill Lynch, he advised on and executed transactions across a number of technology and commerce sectors, including software, contract manufacturing services, semiconductors, retailing/apparel, and Internet and ecommerce. Previously, he worked in equity research at Salomon Smith Barney and conducted research in Asia on foreign direct investments and technology transfer.Paul received a BA with distinction in economics and in political science from Yale University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude. His outside interests include snowboarding, tennis, golf, and the culinary arts.

Rebecca Lynn, Principal, Morgenthaler Ventures (www.morgenthaler.com)

Rebecca joined Morgenthaler’s Menlo Park office in 2007, and she focuses on early-stage investments in mobile, internet services, digital media and financial services. Rebecca began her career at Procter and Gamble where she worked in international new product market entry. She then spent four years at NextCard where she led product development efforts and later served as the Vice President of Marketing where she managed one of the top five largest online marketing efforts. After NextCard, she ran her own consulting business focusing on online marketing for financial services and affiliate marketing. During law school, she was a Summer Associate at Heller Ehrman/Venture Law Group and at Quinn Emanuel where she focused on intellectual property litigation. Rebecca is also an inventor on several issued patents. She was published in the Berkeley Law and Technology Journal, and she is a registered Patent Agent. During business school, Rebecca chaired the Berkeley Business Plan Competition and was a member of New Venture Fellows. Rebecca earned a JD/MBA degree from the Haas School of Business and Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley, and a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Missouri.

Randy Hawks, Managing Director, Claremont Creek Ventures (www.claremontvc.com)

Randy is a Managing Director at Claremont Creek Ventures, bringing more than 25 years of technology industry experience as a senior general manager and venture investor to the group.  Randy invests in Information Technology and has a special interest in Security and Sensor Networks.  In the years prior to co-founding Claremont Creek Ventures, Randy was a General Partner at Novus Ventures and a Venture Partner at Horizon Ventures. Before his venture capital career, Randy had startup experience as CEO at Captiva Software and as COO at Identix (from its founding through IPO and life on NASDAQ).  He served as Sr. VP at AT&T Paradyne and as a VP of Marketing & Division GM at ITT Information Systems (Qume).  Early in his career, Randy served in a variety of roles in the minicomputer business at Texas Instruments and began work as a computer research engineer at Cornell Aeronautical Lab. Representative investments for Randy at CCV include: Shotspotter, Billeo, Wired Benefits, Blue Vector and Sentilla.  Prior investments include Inapac, Invivodata, Flytecomm, View Central and Be Here. Randy holds a BSEE from University of Arkansas and has completed the Stanford University Executive Management Program. He serves as a Committee Chair for Keiretsu Forum and is a member of the US Secret Service Electronics Crime Taskforce.

Michael is a partner in the Corporate & Securities Group. He has a general corporate practice, representing emerging growth and publicly traded companies across a wide spectrum of industries, as well as the institutions and entrepreneurs that finance them. Michael counsels clients on a broad range of corporate and securities law matters, including formation, initial capitalization, private and public financings; mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, recapitalizations, restructurings, technology licensing, general securities law compliance, disclosure obligations, corporate governance and related matters. From 2003-2006, Michael was the Founder/CEO and General Counsel of a San Francisco-based Internet company that provided on-demand personal training solutions to the health and fitness industry.
